Teresa "Teri" Nelsen, PhD, LCMFTPicture of Dr. Nelsen

Dr. Teri Nelsen is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with masters degrees from Kansas State University in marriage and family therapy and the University of Minnesota in Family Life and Parent Education. She earned her PhD in marriage and family therapy at K-State.

Dr. Nelsen conducts a general family therapy practice with emphasis on adolescent issues, parenting, grief and loss issues, helpers & caregivers, and medically involved families -- those with chronic or terminal illnesses/ medical issues, as well as the families of the medical professionals who care for them. Dr. Nelsen also has experience working with soldiers and their families at Ft. Riley and works with many service-related issues.

Dr. Nelsen describes her practice by saying "People who seek therapy have a variety of reasons for doing so, and in my opinion there isn't just one way of doing therapy that will be helpful to every person in every situation. Therefore, I make a point to first listen to and try to understand what circumstances my clients are dealing with, and then tailor the therapy process to fit my client's personality and their situation. It is my assertion that my clients are consumers of therapy, and therefore need to take a very active role in therapy. I cannot "fix" my clients or their problems for them. What I can do is provide guidance for them as to how they might fix their own problems, or change their behaviors and ways of relating to others to minimize the problems within any given relationship. Sometimes my refusal to do their work for them causes my clients to feel angry for awhile, but most report that they feel good about themselves when the work is done and they can take full responsibility for their own growth and for resolving their own problems. I firmly believe that most everyone possesses the ability to find a reasonable sollution to the difficult circumstances they may be facing; it is my hope that together we can find that solution. It may be very hard work, especially emotionally, but I will do my best to provide a safe nurturing environment in which to do this work."

Dr. Nelsen is a Clinical Member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and also is an Approved Supervisor of AAMFT.
